Cataract is the leading cause of blindness in Nigeria. Nigeria's national blindness survey found that about 42 of every 1,000 adults over 40 are blind, roughly one million people. Cataract causes more of that blindness than anything else: about 43 percent.
A cataract is a clouding of the eye's natural lens. It develops slowly, usually with age, until everyday life becomes impossible: reading a price, recognising a face, crossing a road, working. Yet it is one of the most curable causes of blindness anywhere. A short operation replaces the clouded lens with a clear one. Most patients go home the same day, and many see clearly within days.
What your gift does
- Every gift goes into one fund. Our partner eye clinics tell us about patients who need surgery and can't pay. PayForMed reviews every request, then pays the clinic directly. Money never goes to an individual, and every payment is listed on this page, without naming the patient.
- Give once, or give every month. A monthly gift, however small, lets us say yes to the next patient without waiting, and gives someone back their sight, their work and their independence.
How the money is used
Partner clinics ask the fund to cover a patient who can't afford treatment. PayForMed reviews every request, then pays the clinic's invoice directly. Money never goes to an individual, and every payment is listed below without naming the patient.
